Humanities

The Department of Humanities at ST PAULS COLLEGE with varieties of subject combinations that include Journalism, Psychology, English Literature and Political Science gives to our students the best opportunities for learning through curricular as well as extra-curricular activities. The objective of the department is to impart theoretical knowledge blended with practical experience. We guide and enthuse our students to gain a professional touch already at the undergraduate level.
Our students represent and publish research papers in seminars and conferences and have won prizes and awards both nationally and internationally. The Department conducts annual Inter-Collegiate Fest HUMANZA which is a platform for our students to excel in extracurricular activities. MUG SHOT a national level photography competition and BONSAI SHORT FILM FESTIVAL a national level short film competition are among the other initiatives of the department that provide valuable opportunities for exposure and display of talent and creativity.
The department publishes a fortnightly News Letter PAULA PATHRIKA, a daily News Letter DAILY CHRONICLE, a quarterly magazine COSMOS, and ST PAULS TV which covers all the activities of the college and a YouTube channel, DHRISTI, where documentaries on the life of people in and around our college and city are posted. Department provides opportunities for job-oriented internships, industrial visits, educational tours, extension services and outreach programmes.

DSC 1.1 INTRODUCTION TO COMMUNICATION AND MEDIA

Theory:
Unit 1: Fundamentals of Communication- 15 hours

Practical:

1.      Produce two Podcasts with reference to Public Service Announcement or Campus News.

2.      Developing journalistic skills in students by giving assignments to write on any topic of their choice (Minimum of 5 assignments should be written)

3.      Content Creation for Different Media Platforms (Social media platforms, digital storytelling, mobile journalism)

4.      Public Speaking: Techniques for effective public speaking, voice modulation, and audience engagement with reference to social issues.

Practical:

• Radio Program Review Critically analyse radio content by reviewing news, talk, and music shows. Evaluate program structure, anchoring style, and target audience. Submit a comparative report on formats from both private and public radio stations.

• Radio Script Writing Write a script for a 5-minute radio program in any one format—news bulletin, interview, storytelling, or radio drama. Include cues for music, sound effects, and transitions.

• Podcast Production Produce a 3-minute podcast on a topic of your choice

• Television Program Review Review any two TV formats such as news, reality shows, soap operas, or documentaries. Analyse program structure, audience appeal, and production quality. Submit a comparative report.

• Short Documentary Produce a 3–5-minute documentary (individual or in groups of 3–5). Submit the script and behind-the-scenes photos via Google Drive. Use a mix of interviews, archival footage, and background music.

Copyright and Cybercrime Write brief case studies on instances of copyright infringement and cybercrime affecting the media industry. Highlight legal actions and outcomes.
